Step-by-Step Instructions

1
Preheat the oven to 400°F (200°C). In a large bowl, whisk together the soy sauce, hoisin sauce, rice vinegar, five-spice powder, brown sugar, sesame oil, garlic, and ginger. Add the pork shoulder and marinate for at least 30 minutes, or up to 2 hours in the refrigerator.
2
Remove the pork from the marinade and place it on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Roast the pork in the preheated oven for 20-25 minutes per pound, or until it reaches an internal temperature of 160°F (71°C).
3
While the pork is roasting, prepare the glaze by whisking together the soy sauce, hoisin sauce, rice vinegar, and brown sugar in a small saucepan. Bring the glaze to a boil over medium heat, then reduce the heat to low and simmer for 5-7 minutes, or until the glaze has thickened slightly.
4
After the pork has roasted for 20-25 minutes per pound, brush the glaze all over the pork. Return the pork to the oven and roast for an additional 5-10 minutes, or until the glaze is caramelized and sticky.
5
Remove the pork from the oven and let it rest for 10-15 minutes before slicing it thinly against the grain. Serve the pork with steamed vegetables and steamed rice, garnished with green onions and sesame seeds.
